Community Outreach
Cherokee as an organization often feels blessed when we see the many needs in the communities we serve. Because our mission is to enhance life, we partner with other agencies to improve the quality of life and provide information and services to the communities we serve.
Serving the Inner City - Cherokee Health Systems has invested $9 million dollars to build a healthcare facility that provides access and care to city residents and workers. The site is in the center of Knoxville, near public housing, churches, schools, industry, government offices, and close to employees that work downtown. This health facility provides behavioral health and primary care to adults and children. Commercial insurance, TennCare and private pay are accepted. A sliding fee scale is available to anyone uninsured.
Serving the Rural Areas - In 1984, we opened our first medical clinic in Blaine in response to community leaders that expressed a need in an area where no healthcare was being provided. Since that time we have expanded services to other rural communities in need of healthcare. Currently there are 23 Cherokee offices in 11 counties, offering behavioral health or a blend of medical and behavioral health services. Two offices also offer dental care.
Youth Intervention - Anger management and group mentors are a focus of this program that helps young students face challenges at school and home. Based in Hamblen County, the CHS community liaison visits all middle schools to offer this youth intervention program.
Festivals and Fairs - Staff members volunteer their time to provide health screenings, disseminate information and provide health education to children and adults of all ages. Many people that visit the Cherokee Health Systems booth are directed to various social service agencies for assistance with basic needs.
Hispanic Outreach - The Hispanic population is growing by leaps and bounds. It is important to provide
guidance, education and health services that encourage our newest citizens to live a healthy lifestyle. Cherokee Health Systems has established a collaborative health outreach project that provides primary care, behavioral health, dentistry and social services for Hispanics in the counties of Hamblen, Grainger and Jefferson. Bilingual staff, student interns and volunteers bridge the language barrier to educate immigrants on services, resources and health care.
School Physicals - Sports can be fun and a great team-building experience for most kids. But they can require parents to pay for costly physical exams. Cherokee Health Systems offices in Washburn and Maynardville have the bases covered by providing low cost sports physicals. School officials have collaborated with CHS to allow physicals for any youths participating in wrestling, baseball, cheerleading, golf, basketball and football. The check up includes a general exam, flexibility screening and gait analysis.
